About the Parks

Lost Island Theme Park

It started as a concept in 2019 and became a reality in 2022. Lost Island is America’s newest theme park — with an emphasis on theme. This theme park, located in Waterloo, Iowa, literally grew out of the corn fields and now has five themed lands and more than 25 rides and attractions.

The Bertch family — owners and operators — have been a successful business family in Waterloo for many years. Starting off with Bertch Cabinets, then opening Lost Island Waterpark, they launched their latest business adventure, Lost Island Theme Park, in 2022 and expanded on the tropical island feel that the Lost Island Waterpark had started.

Lost Island Theme Park takes visitors on an adventure through the themed lands of Yuta (earth), Udara (air), Mura (fire) and Awa (water). Rides and experiences were created that would fit into each of these realms. Stepping into Lost Island is unlike stepping into any other theme park experience today. It is a world with new characters, an original story, themed rides and an interactive storytelling park app.

The park is full of hidden details and layers upon layers of stories. The beginning of the story in the Tamariki Realm (the kids realm) features the sight of bright colors and the sounds of playful music.

In Udara are three attractions not to be missed: Nopuko, the park's Vekoma suspended looping coaster; Skyborne, an S&S drop tower with one of the three hand-crafted storytelling queues; and Amara Aviators. Currently only the second one in the United States, this Gerstlauer Sky Fly allows riders to control their own adventure while flying among the clouds.

AWA, the water realm includes sea-themed rides and food and drink shops. Yuta Falls, a double-drop flume from Interlink, can be found in Yuta (the earth realm). It features an air-conditioned queue that tells the story of the Yuta people and that of Matugani. Matugani is the park's Intamin Accelerator coaster, which was relocated from Liesburg in Sweden.

In the Mura realm (Fire) is the 2022 Golden Ticket and Brass Ring winner for Best New Attraction — Volkanu the Quest for the Golden Idol. This ride features a storytelling queue, air conditioning and an experience unlike any other. This Sally Dark ride features a 3-D-style shooting game with great animatronics and a mixture of screens and live sets.

While in the park, it is easy to get caught up in the rides, but using and interacting with the Lost Island Adventure Guide app elevates the experience by allowing interaction with the characters, all of which are original. In addition, every land has a play structure or interactive feature that can only be fully activated with a team. Finally, attendees should learn the park’s language.

“Marikawa ke ukau! Ga Waharri te Auk Modu! – Adventure awaits! And welcome to Lost Island!”

Adventureland Park

Since 1974 Adventureland Park in Altoona has been entertaining Iowans. 2024 marks the park’s 50th season. Adventureland was a family-owned park until 2022, when Palace Entertainment acquired it from the Krantz family. If attendees feel a Disney-like vibe when entering, it may be because the rumor is that some of the main designers of the park took their inspiration from Disneyland.

Guests are greeted by a train that runs past the front entrance, atop a hillside with a giant “A” and “Adventureland” spelled out. The entrance features a carousel and buildings with a main street vibe, such as a post office, theater and ice cream shop. The park is then divided into themed areas or lands, which have not been emphasized as the park grew over the years but are still visible if one looks closely.

To the left of main street is the German area, which represents the large German population that lives in and around Des Moines. In this area are buildings with a medieval flare and refreshments that include kettle corn, giant pretzels and the beer garden plus some throwback rides, such as the teacups and Der Flinger (paratrooper ride). Next is the land of the rising sun. This Asian land features the Phoenix roller coaster, a Maurer spinner. Also included is a Zen garden and an Asian food truck featuring egg rolls, wontons, Asian beer and sake.

Farther down the road is Rivertown, also known as the food court area. It includes more 1970s building façades and represents the river towns of the area. Moving over the bridge, guests arrive at what used to be Dragon Island, where the retired O.D. Hopkins The Dragon used to sit. The Dragon was dismantled in 2019.

Past Dragon Island is the western area of the park featuring everything with a western motif, including Outlaw, a Custom Coasters International wood coaster with a sweeping first drop and plenty of airtime moments. This Mike Boodley thrill machine still delivers a punch even after 31 years. Also in the back of the park is the waterpark, which is a tropical oasis, with more than 10 water slides, two swim-up bars, a lazy river and more.

Dragon Slayer is an S&S 4-D free-spin compact model installed when The Dragon was removed. It features a castle entrance and lets guests choose either the squire or the knight side. One is supposed to be wild and one mild; attendees will have to ride both sides to decide which is which.

In the country fair section are carnival games and the 1978 wood classic Tornado. Tornado was William Cobb’s first coaster for which he was the lead designer, and it helped put Adventureland on the map. It became an instant fan favorite and remains one of the premier rides at the park today.

Bernie’s Barnyard is a kid’s land, that focuses on Iowa’s rich history of being a farming state. Just outside of that land are other ties to the local land. There is the Iowa wine and beer “tent” featuring home-grown flavors and live music. No trip to Iowa would be complete without a photo of a giant pig. Petunia the Pig is a 20-foot-tall building paying tribute to one of Iowa’s biggest agricultural exports. Pork tenderloin is a staple everywhere in Iowa, including at Adventureland Park.

In the middle of the park is Monster. This 2016 Gerstlauer Infinity coaster is a fan favorite despite being the reason another fan favorite, the log ride, had to be removed. Monster became an instant hit, with its 133-foot vertical lift hill and five inversions. Not far from Monster is The Underground. This indoor wood coaster, completely refurbished for 2024, tells the story of a hidden mine below Adventureland, where Bad Bob is hiding his gold. This attraction is not to be missed.

Finally, there is the new-for-2023 Flying Viking and Draken Falls. This Zamperla family coaster and log flume ride are double wins for the park: a new family coaster and a log flume to replace the one that closed when Monster was built.

With seven roller coasters and more than 50 attractions, Adventureland is a great park to include in the ACE Preservation Conference. It is celebrating 50 years of family entertainment, has two wooden roller coasters and a flare for the past and is unlike any other park in the United States. Attendees will be in for a real treat.

Worlds of Fun

On May 26, 1973, Lamar Hunt and his business partner, Jack Steadman, opened Kansas City, Missouri’s newest venue for family fun and adventure. The new park opened with 28 rides and attractions in themed areas based on one of Hunt’s favorite books, Around the World in 80 Days. Zambezi Zinger, Schussboomer (both designed by Anton Schwartzkopf) and Silly Serpent were among the opening rides, along with the Worlds of Fun Railroad. Worlds of Fun would grow into 325 acres of fun, one of the largest theme parks in the Midwest.

Over the years Worlds of Fun has seen many rides come and go. Of the original rides on opening day, Worlds of Fun still has six in operation: Worlds of Fun Railroad (Eli), Auto Bahn, Flying Dutchman (Hunt’s favorite ride), Le Taxi Tour, Viking Voyager and Scandi Scrambler.

Worlds of Fun includes several unique and firsts in the ride department. In 1976, along with the Bicentennial Plaza, Scream Roller (Arrow Corkscrew coaster) opened, which in 1983 became the first stand-up coaster in the United States with its conversion to Extreme Roller.

In 1980, Worlds of Fun debuted Orient Express, one of only two coasters with interlocking loops. Sadly Orient Express was removed in 2003. In 1989 Worlds of Fun removed Extreme Roller and replaced it with Timber Wolf. Timber Wolf won the 1989 Golden Ticket for Best New Ride and is now the oldest roller coaster at Worlds of Fun. Also in 1984 Schussboomer was removed.

In 1995, Hunt Midwest sold Worlds of Fun to Cedar Fair, LLC. In 1996 Detonator was the first permanent installation of a Space Shot ride, along with being the first dual tower Space Shot in the world. In 1997, Worlds of Fun removed the original Zambezi Zinger and added Mamba to the park in 1998. At the time Mamba was built, it was a Top 10 steel coaster in the United States.

In 2003, the fan favorite Orient Express was removed after experiencing some track problems. In 2004, Spinning Dragons was installed where the old Fins and Flippers stadium stood. Spinning Dragons was the second installation of this model by Gerstlauer Rides, with the first also being installed in 2004. 2006 brought the largest investment in the park to date, with Patriot, followed in 2009 by Prowler.

In 2023, Worlds of Fun added the reimagined Zambezi Zinger, using some of the same land as the original ride.

With its rich history and collection of rides, Worlds of Fun is a wonderful park to include in the ACE Preservation Conference.

ACCESSIBILITY RENTALS

Please visit each park website for a complete guide for guests with a disability including rentals. ECV and wheelchair rentals will open prior to morning ERT and at night after ERT ends.

VEGETARIAN AND/OR GLUTEN-FREE (GF) OPTION

Attendees who prefer a vegetarian or gluten-free option should select that when registering. ACE needs to provide the host parks with an accurate count in advance. If a park is already offering a vegetarian item and/or gluten-free item, checking the option may not result in a special entree at the park. Please be advised if you are celiac, the parks cannot guarantee that gluten-free items have no cross contamination. The parks will do their best to accommodate special dietary needs.

Registration Information

IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Registration will close on August 1, 2024, at 11:59 p.m., Eastern time. No registrations will be accepted after that date. There will be no on-site registration. Convenient, secure online registration is available by clicking the registration button. Registration must be completed online.

Registration fees are not prorated for partial attendance, and tickets are nontransferable.

Please be advised that Worlds of Fun and all other Cedar Fair parks have moved to a ticketless system. Worlds of Fun will email your tickets to you. If you have a valid season pass, you will be emailed your group meal tickets. Please make certain that you have typed your email address correctly. An incorrect email address could prevent you from receiving your tickets, and you may not be able to enter the park or enter the group meal pavilion. If you are registering more than one person, you may enter additional email addresses for your ACE members and guests. If you enter additional email addresses, those attendees will receive their own tickets. If you do not enter additional email addresses, your ticket will show the number of attendees you paid for, attached to a single QR code on your ticket. That means that all members of your party will have to be together and enter the park or group meal at the same time.

As a result of this new procedure, ACE will have to share email addresses so that Worlds of Fun can email your tickets. You will need to acknowledge the privacy policy disclaimer on the registration form.

If you have any questions or need assistance with the registration process, please email Jeffrey Seifert from the ACE management office at management@aceonline.org.

CONTACT INFORMATION

A phone number is required to process your registration. A confirmation will be sent to the email address listed in your ACE profile. Members are responsible for the conduct of their nonmember guests. Parents and/or guardians are responsible for supervising minor event attendees. Members found to be in violation of the code are subject to ACE's disciplinary procedures, which may be in the form of but not limited to, verbal or written warning, membership suspension or involuntary termination.
