American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE) welcomes you to to Coaster Con 44!
The convention starts on Sunday, June 19, 2022, and ends on Friday, June 24, 2022, and will feature Cedar Point (Sandusky, Ohio) and Kennywood (West Mifflin, Pennsylvania). The convention will start at Cedar Point, June 19 - 22, 2022,
and end at Kennywood, June 23 - 24, 2022.
Attendees will receive:
Admission to two parks
Nine ERT sessions (18 hours!)
Four meals and snacks galore
Behind-the-Scenes Experiences and more!
Cedar Point
Attendees will begin the week with four days at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. Cedar Point first opened in 1870 as a small public bathing beach with a small beer garden, dance floor and bathhouse. Cedar Point, set on a
peninsula jutting out into Lake Erie, is known as the premier summertime entertainment destination from eastern Michigan to northern Ohio and beyond. Over the last 151 years the park has morphed into the thrill ride capital and complete
resort destination it is today.
The modern era of Cedar Point began with the addition of Blue Streak in 1964. The Frank Hoover and John C. Allen design features a traditional out-and-back layout and was named after the local Sandusky High School athletics
nickname. Cedar Creek Mine Ride, Arrow Dynamics’ third mine ride, followed in 1969, marking the first tubular steel coaster at The Point. Corkscrew (1976) became the world's first roller coaster with three inversions.
Gemini (1978) debuted with the world’s biggest drop at 118 feet. Gemini is a must ride for attendees, as it’s only one of two racing, dueling coasters with high-five opportunities in the turns.
Cedar Point, known as America’s Roller Coast, has been setting and breaking records for the last 50 years. Magnum XL 200 changed the industry in 1989 as the tallest, fastest and steepest complete-circuit roller coaster
in the world, as well as the first hypercoaster. Magnum is credited as the coaster that started the “coaster wars.” Eleven years later, Cedar Point rewrote the record book again with Millennium Force. The first gigacoaster
in the United States, its 310-foot cable lift hill, 300-foot drop, two tunnels, three overbanked turns and a top speed of 93 mph set the standard for thrills in the industry. Intamin’s Top Thrill Dragster was the world‘s first
strata coaster, built in 2003 at 425 feet tall and with a 120-mph launch in 3.8 seconds. It’s a ride that can’t be missed. Maverick, a famed Intamin blitz coaster, changed Frontier Town in 2007. Steel Vengeance (2018),
which broke 10 world records at the time, is the latest coaster to satisfy thrill seekers at Cedar Point.
Kennywood
Attendees will then spend the next two days enjoying Kennywood. Kennywood was incorporated in December 1898 and opened in May 1899 by the Monongahela Street Railways as a trolley park. It is one of only two complete amusement
parks to be recognized as a National Historic Landmark by the United States Department of the Interior. The park’s long-standing commitment to combining older rides and attractions that generations continue to enjoy together with newer
thrill rides makes it a place that locals take pride in and a destination that others seek out. Its location in a semi-urban area – with a view of the Edgar Thomson Works steel mill across the river − provides a setting as unique as
its content.
Kennywood is the only amusement park in the world that is home to three ACE Roller Coaster Landmarks, and all of them happen to be wood: Jack Rabbit, which has been operating for over 100 years, is also an ACE Coaster
Classic and is notable for its signature double dip; Racer, one of only two remaining single-track racing coasters (and the only one in the Western Hemisphere); and Thunderbolt, a 1924 coaster that was reimagined in 1968
and put Kennywood on enthusiasts’ maps in the 1970s. Two of the park’s five steel coasters are particularly significant: The Phantom’s Revenge, a 2001 re-creation of the 1991 Steel Phantom; and The Steel Curtain,
a nine-inversion, record-breaking coaster that debuted in 2019. It should be noted that with one exception, all of Kennywood’s coasters are one-of-a-kind custom designs, with four of them integrating the park’s hilly topography into
their design. Even The Exterminator, a production model Reverchon spinning mouse, is made unique by the fact that it’s completely indoors and contains dark ride features.
Kennywood is also home to a number of unique, rare and historic flat rides and dark rides. Among them is Turtle, the world’s only remaining Traver Bug; Auto Race, the world’s only existing Traver auto car ride; Kangaroo, the
world’s only remaining Norman Bartlett Flying Coaster, which returns in 2022 after a two-year hiatus; Old Mill, a water dark ride that dates to 1901; a beautiful three-abreast Dentzel carousel that debuted in 1927 and is accompanied
by a 1916 Wurlitzer band organ; and the only remaining operating Noah’s Ark walkthrough funhouse. In addition, the park contains historic structures from a number of different eras. An array of lighting, including neon, dazzles guests
in the evening. The visit during Coaster Con 44 will make Kennywood the first park in ACE’s history to host an annual convention five times!

There’s a lot going on in the Pittsburgh area the week of Coaster Con, including, but not limited to, an enormous youth baseball tournament spanning all age categories, the “Beyond the Stars” National Finals and the Pirates Major League
Baseball team hosting the Chicago Cubs, which always draws fans from out of town. Coaster Con event planners were challenged to find quality, affordable lodging options but ultimately succeeded. The caveat is that ACE will be utilizing
a total of eight different properties in three different areas. The options are grouped by area, with a brief description of each area that includes its proximity to Kennywood and other landmarks.
KENNYWOOD / WEST MIFFLIN AREA
West Mifflin is the Pittsburgh-area suburb that includes Kennywood. The commercial district of West Mifflin where the area’s hotels are located is along Lebanon Church Road, where travelers will find a number of casual and fast-food eateries.
Those staying in this area will find access to and from interstate highways to be a little distant but will conversely find travel between the hotels and Kennywood to be reasonably quick with secondary roads (generally free of heavy
traffic) connecting them. Depending on the lodging facility and time of day, travel time varies from 11 to 19 minutes between Lebanon Church Road and Kennywood.

SOUTH SIDE / DOWNTOWN AREAS
ACE has secured some rooms in Pittsburgh’s vibrant downtown and South Side areas. These urban areas offer a wealth of unique restaurants, bars and entertainment venues, yet can still be within a 20-minute drive of Kennywood. In fact, the
Hyatt House is located just four miles farther down Route 837 than The Waterfront. Paid parking is an unfortunate side effect of staying in these lively locations, but one hotel (Sheraton Station Square) is offering Coaster Con attendees
parking at no additional charge, and that hotel is located directly across the river from downtown Pittsburgh and provides easy access to Kennywood via either the interstate or secondary roads (the best option varying depending on
time of day).
