Come get "Rocky Mountain High" in Colorado at this year's ACE Preservation Conference as we celebrate one of America's classic amusement parks. The conference runs from Friday, August 20 to Sunday, August 22, 2021, at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park (Glenwood Springs, Colorado), Lakeside Amusement Park and Elitch Gardens (Denver, Colorado).

ACE members will begin the weekend at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park. The park's roots go all the way back to 1895, when the Fairy Caves were opened to the public, but they closed at the onset of World War I. In 1999, owners Steve and Jeanne Beckley reopened the caverns and soon started transforming the adjacent lands into America’s only operating mountain-top theme park. They caught the attention of thrill seekers worldwide when they installed the Alpine Coaster, a Wiegand Mountain Coaster, in 2005, the first such ride in the United States. Things got even crazier in 2012 when the park installed the aptly named Cliffhanger on the edge of a cliff with a 1,450-foot drop to the scenic Glenwood Canyon and Colorado River below! This is the highest elevation full-size coaster.

In 2017, the park excavated a 110-foot-deep shaft into the mountain that became The Haunted Mine Drop, North America’s first drop ride that sends riders deep into the bowels of the earth. This unique attraction won the Best Amusement Park Attraction of 2017 in the nation by USA Today.

There is plenty to do including two cave tours so plan to spend the day and enjoy all the attractions at this unique park.

On Saturday, the conference continues at family-owned Lakeside Amusement Park in Lakeside, Colorado, adjacent to Denver. The park was opened in 1908 as a popular amusement resort adjacent to Lake Rhoda (originally named Sylvan Lake and then Lakeside Lake before being renamed Lake Rhoda by her father, Ben Krasner). The park was built by Denver brewer Adolph Zang and his associates and then purchased by Ben Krasner in 1935. The park was nicknamed White City because of all the lights and buildings painted white. Today it is one of only thirteen trolley parks operating and one of the oldest amusement parks in the United States, and the oldest still running in Colorado. The park, comprising nearly half of the Town of Lakeside that it was responsible for creating in 1907, features the landmark Tower of Jewels. Rhoda Krasner remains the owner of the park along with her daughter Brenda Fishman, third generation owner.

The park was built in the Beaux Arts style of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. The classic neon lighting and Art Deco architecture is all over the park on most rides and buildings. Coupled with its location on the shores of Lake Rhoda makes it a picturesque setting, day and night. Many of structures and buildings in the park date to 1908 as well.

The Lakeshore Railroad miniature railway traverses a route around the entirety of Lake Rhoda providing an amazing view of the park that should be enjoyed in both daytime and nighttime. The train ride dates to 1908. There are two steam locomotives, "Puffing Billy" and "Whistling Tom" that are from the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, as well as what's believed to be the world's first miniature train diesel engine, which is modeled after a California Zephyr. The carousel dates to 1908 and is a Parker carousel, but with wooden horses by famous carver Charles Loof. The park is home to three of the four different "O-Plane" rides made by Eyerly: a Rock-O-Plane, Loop-O-Plane and Roll-O-Plane. The park's extensive collection of flat rides also includes a classic Mangels Whip and the unique Heart Flip ride.

Attendees are sure to enjoy the park’s coasters. An ACE Coaster Classic and ACE Roller Coaster Landmark, Cyclone was designed by Edward Vettel and opened in 1940. Wild Chipmunk, a Miler Wild Mouse, opened in 1955. A Miler Kiddie Coaster can be found in the kiddie section of the park. The park also purchased a Pinfari Zyklon in 2018 that it is refurbishing and making ADA compliant. It is hoped that this as-yet-unnamed coaster will be open in time for the ACE Preservation Conference.

The weekend concludes at Elitch Gardens: the first home of the Denver Symphony Orchestra, one of the first zoos west of Chicago, Denver’s first botanical garden and the site of Denver’s first movie theater. From its opening in 1890, Elitch Gardens has been a leader in the amusement park industry and a treasured asset to the city of Denver, roles it continues to play today.

In 1995, the park was relocated to its current site, just west of downtown Denver which, at 60 acres, is two and a half times the size of the original. The additional space has not been wasted.

The park features more than 40 rides and attractions in a lushly landscaped setting; it was the lush, beautiful gardens of the original site that gave the park its name. The historic carousel made the move to the park and sits in a nice building just inside the entrance. The park sits right next to the Pepsi Center, home to the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche and Colorado Mammoth. It is also very close to the Empower Field at Mile High, home to the Denver Broncos. At over 100-feet tall, The Big Wheel Ferris wheel and 250-foot tall Observation Tower provide great views of Denver.

In 1996, owner Sandy Gurtler sold it to Premier Parks and in 1999 it was branded as Six Flags, which lasted through 2006. Since then, it was owned by a couple of different outfits and since 2015, it's been locally owned, and operated by Premier Parks LLC. Also, in 2015, the park was purchased by an investment team made up of Revesco Properties, Kroenke Sports Entertainment, and Second City Real Estate. However, operation remained under the control of Premier Parks LLC.

The centerpiece of the park’s coaster collection is Twister II. While not an identical copy of the coaster that stood at the original park site, this 100-foot-tall reincarnation uses the same basic footprint. A highlight of this 55-mph woodie is the frightening trek into its darkened and lateral-filled tunnel.

The Arrow Dynamics Sidewinder, one of the few remaining examples of its kind, operated at Magic Springs in Arkansas from 1980 to 1989, and was the only coaster moved from the old location, where it debuted in 1990. The park also boasts two Vekoma steel coasters: Mind Eraser, with five inversions, added in 1997; and Boomerang, with three inversions (that riders go through both forward and backward), added in 1999. In 2004 North America’s first Intamin Half Pipe coaster arrived at Elitch Gardens. In 2013 the park added its most recent coaster, Blazin’ Buckaroo, a family coaster from E&F Miler Industries.

In 2019 Elitch Gardens collaborated with the Meow Wolf art collective to overhaul its dark ride into a unique art experience, Meow Wolf Kaleidoscape. This is the first amusement ride completely redesigned by artists, and it has many details that demand multiple rides to fully appreciate it.

Elitch Gardens also offers the Island Kingdom Water Park, adjacent to the theme park and included with your admission. This water adventure park is packed with thrilling water slides, a relaxing lazy river and a wave pool.

Given the value of the urban property on which the park sits, it's been speculated that the land may one day be developed and the park moved yet again, perhaps to the suburbs.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the park did not operate for the 2020 season. It was the first time in 130 years, that the park closed down for an entire season, with the park's entire 130th season instead being deferred to 2021.

Come celebrate the park's 130th season during the ACE Preservation Conference!
