American Coaster Enthusiasts welcomes you back to Eastern Pennsylvania for Coaster Con 43! The convention starts on Sunday, June 20, 2021, ends on Saturday, June 26, 2021, and will feature Hersheypark (Hershey, Pennsylvania), Dutch Wonderland (Lancaster, Pennsylvania), Dorney Park (Allentown, Pennsylvania) and Knoebels Amusement Resort (Elysburg, Pennsylvania). ACE will also be visiting Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters, Inc. (Hatfield, Pennsylvania).

ACE members will begin the week with three days at Hersheypark. Opened in May 1906, the park was originally built as a leisure park for the employees of Milton S. Hershey’s Hershey Chocolate Company and was called Hershey’s Park. The park featured a baseball field, and concerts were held frequently. Over the years, Hersheypark gradually added rides and as of 2020 has 15 roller coasters. The oldest operating roller coaster in the park is Comet. Comet was built by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company (PTC) in 1946 and features a 78-foot first drop and a unique double out-and-back terrain-hugging design. Don’t miss out on coaster enthusiast favorites like the 1977 Schwarzkopf looping sooperdooperLooper (the first modern looping coaster on the East Coast); the pulse-pounding rush of Storm Runner; the thrill of racing and dueling against your fellow enthusiasts on Lightning Racer; Great Coasters International’s first-ever roller coaster, Wildcat; the thunderous roar of Great Bear; and the extreme airtime of Skyrush. New for the 2020 season was Candymonium, a thrilling airtime-filled steel hypercoaster built by Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M). Named Hershey’s Chocolatetown, guests now enter through a brand-new main entrance filled with shops, restaurants, a Hershey Kiss water fountain, a new home for the 1919 PTC-built Carrousel (PTC #47; moved to Hersheypark in 1945) and Candymonium roller coaster. The park also features Kissing Tower, an observation tower with unique Hershey Kiss windows; Coal Cracker, a classic Arrow log flume; Hershey Triple Tower, three S&S Worldwide launch/drop towers; Reese’s Cupfusion interactive 4-D dark ride; and the iconic Hershey’s chocolate tour in Chocolate World.

During the first three days, we’ll also spend a morning and early afternoon enjoying the “Kingdom of Kids” known as Dutch Wonderland, which opened in May 1963. Visitors to this family theme park are greeted by a colorful fairytale castle and various mythically themed attractions. The park’s first roller coaster, Kingdom Coaster, was the first coaster ever built by Custom Coasters International. Standing at a modest 55 feet, this out-and-back wooden coaster delivers great moments of airtime and thrilling laterals on each turn. The park also features a Chance Big Dipper model called Joust and the 2018 inverted coaster from S&S – Sansei, Merlin’s Mayhem, which includes an onboard soundtrack and a soaring layout in and around nearby attractions. Attendees will also enjoy classic Lusse bumper cars; a one-of-a-kind boat ride, Dragon’s Lair; a rare haunted swing ride, Dutch Wonder House; a classic Arrow log flume, Double Splash Flume; and Exploration Island featuring Prehistoric Path and Gondola Cruise.

Attendees will then spend the next two days enjoying Dorney Park. Opened in 1884, the park has seen many changes over the years. Today, Thunderhawk, built by PTC in 1924, is the park’s oldest, the ninth oldest operating roller coaster in the world and also the newest ACE Roller Coaster Landmark! While Thunderhawk is only 80 feet tall, it delivers some spectacular moments of airtime along with a classic out-and-back layout. Other popular coasters include a dynamic duo of custom-built B&M steel coasters, Talon and Hydra the Revenge; the towering heights of Steel Force; the thrilling zero-G spikes of Possessed; the junior-sized Woodstock’s Express; and the hairpin turns of Wild Mouse. Other notable attractions include the 1921 Dentzel Carousel (moved to the park from Cedar Point in 1995) celebrating 100 years in 2021; the Whip, celebrating 101 years in 2021; the only remaining first-generation Intamin freefall ride in North America, Demon Drop; an S&S combo tower, Dominator; and Zephyr Railroad, a one-of-a-kind narrow gauge, gas-electric train built in 1935.

During these two days, Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters, Inc. (PTCI) will be opening its doors and welcoming Coaster Con attendees to tour the shop. Owner and close friend of ACE Tom Rebbie is excited to show ACEers around, talk about the history of the company and give everyone an up-close-and-personal look at amusement park artifacts and ride vehicles that PTCI is generously storing for ACE. Attendees will also enjoy a delicious meal and other surprises. This will be a not-to-be-missed visit!

The week will wrap up with two full days at the world-famous Knoebels Amusement Resort. This unique family-owned and operated amusement park that includes picnic groves and a campground has offered classic rides, free admission and free parking since 1926. The park is home to Phoenix, the wooden roller coaster that won Amusement Today’s annual Golden Ticket Award for the best wooden roller coaster in the world for two straight years. Phoenix originally opened as Rocket at Playland Park (San Antonio, Texas) and was moved to Knoebels in June 1985. Twister opened in 1999. It is loosely based on the layout design of Mr. Twister, which operated at Elitch Gardens (Denver, Colorado) and features an intense 720-degree sloped helix. Construction on Flying Turns started in January 2006, and the coaster finally opened in October 2013. It is the first wooden bobsled coaster to be built in over 50 years and glides riders through a wooden trough on trains that aren’t affixed to the track. Black Diamond was moved to Knoebels from Morey’s Piers and opened in October 2011. This dark ride journey starts in a haunted mine, moves through bat-infested corridors and ends in the abandoned town of Centralia. Be sure to also check out the soaring vertical thrills of Impulse and the junior-sized fun of Kozmo’s Kurves. The park also features a number of vintage attractions such as the Whip (1915), Lusse Auto Scooters, enthusiast-favorite Flyer, Satellite, Roto-Jet (1952), Looper, Pioneer Train and the PTC-built cuddle up Tea Cups. You can also catch modern thrills like PowerSurge, Fandango, StratosFear, Giant Flume and the new-for-2019 Tumbling Timbers. A visit to Knoebels is never complete until you try and catch the brass ring on Grand Carousel and face the chills of Haunted Mansion.

SPIRIT OF ACE AWARD
The Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters Inc. Manufacturer’s Award, popularly known as the Spirit of ACE Award, is presented annually at the Coaster Con banquet. This award honors a member of ACE who goes above and beyond simply identifying as a roller coaster enthusiast. Those who are nominated view ACE as more than just coaster riding: they have a love for roller coasters and a passion for preserving the amusement industry, while also helping it expand. Nominees foster and promote the conservation, appreciation, knowledge and enjoyment of roller coasters. Nominations are accepted through June 8, 2021. Nominations can be emailed to janine.ptc@comcast.net or mailed to Janine Rebbie-Matscherz, 3195 Penn Ave., Hatfield, PA 19440.

BANQUET (Separate Ticketed Event)
The keynote speaker for this year's banquet will be Dick Knoebel and family members. The banquet menu will include chicken with bruschetta, sliced flank steak with honey sriracha glaze, stuffed shells, garlic mashed potatoes, bourbon-glazed baby carrots and assorted desserts. The kid's meal, for ages 9 and under, includes chicken tenders, french fries and fruit cup.

Please be advised that there will be capacity limitations to the banquet this year due to the COVID-19 mandates enforced by the state of Pennsylvania on social gatherings. Indoor events are more restrictive. To be in compliance, ticket sales are expected to be limited. If tickets are sold out, and you want to attend the banquet, you can place your name on a waiting list. If capacity restrictions ease up in the May/June timeframe, more tickets will be made available for sale. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES TOURS
There may be space limitations on tours due to the COVID-19 mandates. We want to apologize that space may not be available for everyone to experience the tours. We do want to ensure that as many as possible will have access to them. We plan to have a fair and equitable process in place to give everyone an equal opportunity for choices. Additional information will be shared closer to the event.

NONMEMBERS
Nonmembers must be guests of an attending member. Members must include their nonmember guests on the registration and are responsible for the actions and behaviors of those guests. The name, city and state as they appear on your registration will be used for name badges. There is no charge for children two years and under, but we do need their names for name badges. Please list their names when registering.

DIETARY RESTRICTIONS
Please check the vegetarian option for any attendees who prefer a vegetarian option. ACE needs to provide the host parks with an accurate count in advance. However, most of the parks are offering a vegetarian entree, on the main menu, so checking the option may not result in a special entree at the park.

Check the "other" option if you have any other dietary restriction and specify what that is. Please be advised if you are celiac, the parks cannot guarantee that gluten-free items have no cross contamination. The parks will do their best to accommodate special dietary needs.

PTCI VISIT
Please select the PTCI option if you plan to visit on Wednesday, June 23, 2021. Pre-registration is required to attend. In addition, you must select a time slot. Each time slot has a limited attendance number. Before selecting, it is advisable that you coordinate with other friends and family members if you want to be in the same time slot. ACE needs to provide PTCI with an accurate count in advance so they can plan social gathering and lunch accordingly.

Each group will be able to tour the facility, bid on silent auction items, have a live auction during their designated lunch window, enjoy a lunch provided by PTCI that includes Italian hoagies, chips, soft pretzels and beverages. A group photo of each group will be taken at the end of each time slot. In addition, PTCI will be offering a T-shirt. If attending, please indicate your size (S – 3XL) on the registration form. You must attend the tour to receive your free T-shirt. Please note that these activities occur indoors.

PTCI recommends carpooling to the facility to allow for ample parking.

Please be advised that capacity may be limited. If sold out when registering, and you want to attend the tour, you can place your name on a waiting list. If space becomes available, you will be contacted.
