Multicultural festival with live music, food trucks, cultural entertainment and the unveiling of the Gwynn Oak Mosaic, The Ride to Equality, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the desegregation of Gwynn Oak Park and the heroes that made it happen.
Everyone knows about the big march on Washington on August 28, 1963. That's when ML King delivered his "I have a dream" speech. Well, the owners of Gwynn Oak did not want to integrate, but the political pressure was such that they finally agreed to do it. The county commissioner negotiated with the owners, and they picked Aug 28 as the day to integrate, figuring all the public attention would be on the DC march rather than Gwynn Oak Park.
A family that had planned to go to DC decided to go to Gwynn Oak Park instead. When they took their 2 year old daughter on the carousel, she was the first black person to ride rides at Gwynn Oak. It was a big deal.
The woman who was that 2 year old girl will be there---reading from her book A Ride to Remember.
Details: 1PM -- Meetup at the ‘steps by the lake’ (only remnant of the amusement park) for conversation with
fellow coaster enthusiasts.
Look for Bill Galvin wearing an ACE shirt. Bill frequented this park when he was a child.
