American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE) welcomes you to to the ACE Preservation Conference!
The event starts on Friday, August 25, 2023, and ends on Sunday, August 27, 2023, and will feature Playland Park (Rye, New York), Adventureland (Farmingdale, New York), Deno's Wonder Wheel Amusement Park at Coney Island (Brooklyn, New
York) and Luna Park at Coney Island (Brooklyn, New York). The event will begin at Playland Park, August 25, 2023, followed by Adventureland, August 26, 2023, and end at the two Coney Island parks on August 27, 2023.
Playland Park
Playland Park is located in Rye, New York, which is just north of New York City and in Westchester County, along Long Island Sound. Playland was built in 1928 and was owned and operated by the Westchester County government for many years.
However, in 2018 Standard Amusements LLC was contracted to operate the park. Standard Amusements LLC agreed to invest $27.5 million into the park and will manage Playland for 30 years. Westchester County will maintain ownership of
the park and receive annual base rent and 8 percent of the park's profits but only after Standard Amusements has recouped its initial investment. Playland Park is a National Historic Landmark. It is noteworthy that Playland has one
of the last running Derby Racers.
Crazy Mouse is a classic Zig Zag nonspinning roller coaster made by Zamperla. The cars look like a mouse with a tail on the back of the car. They sit four adults, two per row. It has been operating since 2003 at Playland.
Dragon Coaster, which is an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark, opened in 1929. The coaster serves as the park’s mascot and appears in the Playland Log. This roller coaster was designed and built by Frederick A. Church. It features
a tunnel that resembles the body of the dragon, and the opening of the tunnel resembles the dragon’s mouth. Dragon Coaster has operated with Morgan trains since 1989.
Superflight was manufactured by Zamperla and is a Volare model. This roller coaster is a flying coaster in which riders lie on their stomachs instead of sitting to ride. It features a spiral lift and heartline roll. Riders
are arranged four across.
Kiddy Coaster is recognized as an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark as well. Built in 1927 by Frank Darling, it opened in 1928. It reaches a maximum height of 16 feet and features four gentle dips and a turnaround drop. In 1953,
the ride's original classic trains were replaced with two Comet Jr. coaster trains from the National Amusement Device Company of Dayton, Ohio, that continue to thrill riders today. There are three cars per train, and riders can sit
two across in a single row for a total of six riders per train. Adults are not allowed to ride during park operation.
Family Flyer roller coaster has been operating since 2001 and was manufactured by Zamperla. It’s a family-style coaster. Riders sit two per row for a total of 12 riders per train. Adults are allowed to ride alone. This
roller coaster features a chain lift with a single helix.
Adventureland
Adventureland is a small amusement park in East Farmingdale, Long Island, New York. It contains a selection of approximately 30 rides and three roller coasters, of which the newest one, Fireball, just opened in 2022. The other two
coasters are Rattlesnake Coaster, which opened in 2000, and Turbulence in 2015. Another notable ride is the Mystery Mansion dark ride, which runs on an inverted roller coaster track.
The park was established in 1962 when Alvin Cohen and Herb Budin opened a restaurant, an arcade and mini golf on the 12-acre property on Long Island, about 30 minutes east of New York City. They brought in four rides: the Carousel,
the Iron Horse train, Little Dipper and boats. Willy Miller bought the park in 1977 and over the years has added new rides and activities. In 1987, Tony Gentile and Peter Amoruso took over Adventureland and operate it to this
day. They introduced the first water rides to Adventureland and also brought a haunted Halloween event to the park.
Fireball is the latest and newest family roller coaster. It opened in 2022 as the first of its kind attraction in the United States from Ride Engineers Switzerland. It is 69 feet tall with a vertical lift that sends riders
zigzagging down 300 feet of track as the vehicle rocks gently back and forth.
A Tivoli-style family coaster from Zierer, Rattlesnake Coaster, opened in 2000. It carries up to 24 riders around 650 feet of track and has a top height of 20 feet. Originally it was named Paul Bunyan Express. In
the second year of operation, it was renamed Ladybug Coaster, and for the 2019 season it received its current name, Rattlesnake Coaster.
Advertised as the largest and only spinning coaster in Long Island, Turbulence was manufactured by Mack Rides and opened in the 2015 season. Its train has three cars that individually spin while traversing the 55-foot
lift hill and 1,250 feet of track.
While not technically a roller coaster, Mystery Mansion is a dark ride that operates with cars suspended on powered coaster tracks and travels through rooms with various animatronics and special effects over its two-floor layout.
Built and designed by the Italian company Gosetto, it opened in 2018 and replaced the old haunted house located on the same spot.
Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park at Coney Island
Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park at Coney Island is a family-owned amusement park that opened in 1920 after the Wonder Wheel was built. Denos Vourderis launched a restaurant called the Anchor Bar and Grill, which was next door to the
Wonder Wheel. Then in 1970 Deno’s opened a concession stand. In 1976 Deno’s purchased the kiddie amusement park from John Curran.
In 1983, Denos acquired the Wonder Wheel and Spook-a-Rama from Fred Garms and Walter Kerner Sr. This was after Denos bought the Wonder Wheel as a wedding present for his wife, Lula. “A ring so big, everyone in the world sees
how much he loved her — a ring that would never be lost.” Denos passed away in 1994, and the park has been operated by his two sons, Dennis and Steve, along with several other Vourderis family members.
The Wonder Wheel opened in 1920, stands 150 feet tall and weighs 200 tons. It has 24 cars, of which 16 are swinging and eight are stationary. The swinging cars slide on a serpentine track toward the hub of the wheel, sort of
like a roller coaster track. Each car holds six people for a total ride capacity of 144. Personally, the ACE New York region team loves swinging cars!
Sea Serpent is a family coaster made by E & F Miler Industries that opened in 1999. It was the first coaster that opened at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park. Adults are allowed to ride.
Phoenix opened two years after being announced, owing to COVID-19. On this Vekoma suspended family coaster, riders hang from below the track with feet dangling while seated. In the 10 cars, riders are arranged two across
for a total of 20 riders per train. Phoenix sits on the land that once was the 12th Street Amusement area. The roller coaster opened in 2021 and has been a huge success for the Vourderis family. In the words of Dennis Vourderis,
"is the best."
Skyflyer opened in 2021. Made by SBF Visa Group, this kiddie coaster features a booster wheel lift hill. The single train has three cars, and small riders are arranged two across in two rows for a total of 12 riders. Adults
must ride alone and are allowed to ride.
Luna Park at Coney Island
The current Luna Park in Coney Island opened May 29, 2010, on the site of Astroland. The park was designed, developed and operated by Central Amusement International, which is a subsidiary of Zamperla. Alessandro Zamperla (CEO and president)
operates and owns Zamperla, which is an Italian company that currently focuses on building rides for the amusement industry. The Zamperla family recently lost Alberto Zamperla, son of Alessandro Zamperla, who was instrumental in the
recovery of Coney Island. Luna Park is well known for its mixture of rides but also for the famous Cyclone roller coaster.
The Coney Island Cyclone opened in 1927 and was named a National Historical Landmark on June 26, 1991, during its 64th birthday. In 2022, the Cyclone turned 95 years old! ACE declared the Coney Island Cyclone an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark in June 2002. The Coney Island Cyclone was designed by Vernon Keenan and built by Harry C. Baker. When it opened, it was 2,640 feet long and 85 feet high.
Circus Coaster opened on May 29, 2010, and was manufactured by Zamperla. Considered a “kiddie coaster” in the community, it has six cars per train, and riders can sit two across. Adults are allowed to ride. Also from Zamperla,
The Tickler opened May 29, 2010. This coaster is a Wild Mouse and spins as it moves around the track. Riders can sit four across. A Zamperla Moto Coaster, Steeplechase opened in 2011. Riders sit two across in a single
row. Currently themed as horses, the coaster allows a total of 12 riders per train. Soarin’ Eagle by Zamperla opened in 2011. In this Volare model, riders lie down four across and fly under the track. Thunderbolt opened
in 2014. Riders sit three across for a total of nine riders per car. Its elements include a vertical chain lift, loop, zero-G roll, dive loop and corkscrew. This imposing steel coaster takes up almost all of a city block. Mini Mouse was previously at Victorian Gardens in Central Park. In this small Mini Mouse model, also by Zamperla, riders are arranged two across in a single row with eight cars for a total of 16 riders. Adults are allowed to ride Mini Mouse.
Tony’s Express pays tribute to the first roller coaster ever built in America, the Switchback Railway. This is Luna Park’s eighth roller coaster and pays homage to the late Antonio (Tony) Zamperla. The roller coaster bends and
curves around the log flume (Leti’s Treasure) at more than 30 mph and covers 1,200 feet of track.
