WORLD’S LARGEST RIDE ENTHUSIAST ORGANIZATION HONORS HERSHEYPARK ROLLER COASTER WITH HISTORIC DESIGNATION

Comet recognized as an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark

HERSHEY, PA. – The American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE) unveiled a landmark plaque for the Hersheypark Comet during Coaster Con 43 this week. This year marks the 75th anniversary of this classic out-and-back wooden roller coaster. It first opened to the public in June 1946 and was the last coaster added to the park by founder Milton S. Hershey.

The designation as an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark is reserved for rides of historic significance. “For over a century people have enjoyed the historic Comet at Hersheypark, one of the few remaining examples of Herbert Schmeck’s handiwork at Philadelphia Toboggan Company,” said ACE President Robert Ulrich. “Having family in the Susquehanna area, I am happy that ACE is reuniting and celebrating this classic wooden coaster’s thrills at Coaster Con 43.” Comet is best known for delighting generations of riders with several airtime-producing hills, reaching a top speed of 50 mph during its 3,360-foot-long ride. ACE commends Hersheypark for its continued excellence in the ongoing preservation of the Comet, the park’s enduring and oldest roller coaster.

The ceremony coincided with Coaster Con, the largest annual gathering of ACE members. The ceremony was delayed a year owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
