Each November, the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) hosts the world’s largest attractions trade show. This expo hosts more than 1,000 exhibitors and 40,000 professionals from all over the world for 5 days in Orlando, Florida.

To a roller coaster enthusiast, the IAAPA Expo marks the time for manufacturers and parks to announce new attractions, often with a grand reveal of a front car, new animatronics or other large-scale, eye-catching items. However, for both enthusiasts and exhibitors, the IAAPA Expo is so much more than what happens during the first day.

Because it is an amusement industry trade show, booths include all of the things that the average enthusiast would expect: ride manufacturers, arcade games and lots of yummy snacks to sample. But so much more goes into each element of an amusement park than what might be expected.

Have you ever walked into an amusement park and felt as though you entered a completely different universe? The theming is so out of this world that it seems impossible for anyone to have designed and then executed such elements. At the IAAPA Expo, there is a whole subsection of the show floor dedicated to booths staffed by the people who create everything from particular flooring and fake facades to rock formations. Another section of the show floor is dedicated to special effects such as fake snow, fog machines and water lights.

Think of a ride — pretty much any will do. The ride itself is designed and made by a specific manufacturer, but where do they get the special parts that made the ride come together — wheels, seat belts, chains or even individual lights? A booth for each element of a ride can be found on the IAAPA Expo show floor, even ones that are seemingly overlooked. For example, there is one main manufacturer of roller coaster wheels that makes polyurethane wheels for a multitude of different ride manufacturers. From wheels to seat belts and beyond: someone has to make them, and the manufacturer is likely to be found on the IAAPA Expo floor!

Attendees took their time exploring vendor booths, collecting keepsakes, and engaging in conversations about the latest advancements in the amusement industry. As morning excitement built into afternoon anticipation, Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M) unveiled the lead car for Tormenta Rampaging Run at Six Flags Over Texas (Arlington), the first giga dive coaster and B&M’s third tallest coaster ever. Tormenta will be the tallest, fastest, longest and only giga dive coaster, standing 309 feet tall with a 95-degree drop. It will feature the highest Immelmann inversion at 218 feet and reach speeds of up to 87 mph in the themed land of Rancho De La Tormenta.

Many enthusiasts have enjoyed the classic Steeplechase, a type of roller coaster using several side-by-side tracks to simulate a racing environment, and now the next generation has arrived. S&S announced RailRyder, a family-friendly, high-capacity coaster model, featuring low-to-the-rail open seating and providing a thrilling experience for riders 39 inches tall and up. This gives parks another type of family thrill ride to choose when filling this gap in their lineup. And this unique single-rail design uses only a seatbelt as a restraint!

To the surprise of many onlookers, a new Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC) single-rail coaster was announced for the charming seaside park Family Kingdom in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This custom-built coaster, set to debut in the summer of 2026, will complement the park’s 60-year-old Swamp Fox, a family-oriented wooden roller coaster. The ride will reach 100 feet in height, hit speeds up to 52 mph and span 1,920 feet of track. For the new ownership, this is an important investment for the park’s next chapter as they expand into a different demographic from that of their family-friendly wooden coaster.

This year’s show floor is brimming with incredible attractions, and one standout area is Haunting Grounds. This immersive space has captivated attendees with its spine-chilling - yet playful - atmosphere, featuring an impressive array of animatronics
that bring eerie characters to life. The area also showcases intricately designed decorative wall panels, seamlessly blending spooky themes with a touch of whimsy. For fans of haunted attractions or those simply drawn to cutting-edge theming, Haunting
Grounds is a must-see highlight of IAAPA Expo.

Moser Rides, the esteemed Italian manufacturer known for its innovative amusement attractions, unveiled a unique version of its iconic drop tower ride: the Spring Ride. While this model retains the familiar sit-down seating configuration found on many
thrill rides, it introduces an exciting new feature — Spring Up seating. Designed for those seeking an extra rush, the Spring Up seats allow riders to stand during the ascent and free-fall. To experience this dynamic new ride option, guests must be
at least 47 inches tall. This bold innovation sets the Spring Ride apart from traditional drop towers, offering a fresh, adrenaline-pumping experience for thrill seekers who want to elevate their ride experience to the next level.

Altitude Attractions is a dynamic leader in the design and manufacture of cutting-edge amusement rides, specializing in creating thrilling experiences that push the limits of adventure and excitement. Once again on the IAAPA Expo show floor, they brought
two drop towers. One was the unique Hammered drop ride, which combines cutting-edge technology with a unique design. Featuring a custom-engineered restraint system, riders experience incredible exposure and freedom while remaining securely fastened
for safety. With a minimum rider height of 36 inches and a maximum weight capacity of 300 pounds per rider, it’s designed for a wide range of thrill seekers. Hammered utilizes a state-of-the-art magnetic braking system, ensuring a smooth, controlled
stop with no jerking or bouncing, keeping the excitement high and the ride comfortable. Capable of accommodating two to six riders at a time, it allows friends, family, or fellow adventurers to share the experience. For added fun, riders can choose
between Slow Mode for a more relaxed experience and Fast Mode for maximum speed and adrenaline. Its compact 18-foot square footprint makes it a great addition to parks with limited space, offering big thrills in a small package.

Attendees also learned more of the storyline and backstory for Danse Macabre at Efteling in the Netherlands (Kaatsheuvel, North Brabant). Opened on October 31, 2024, Danse Macabre is a dark, immersive ride. Inspired by the medieval Danse Macabre theme,
which depicts death leading a dance of people from all walks of life, the ride takes guests on a spooky journey through eerie scenes filled with skeletons, ghosts and other supernatural elements.

Using trackless ride technology, animatronics, sophisticated projections and lighting effects, this new Intamin dark ride offers an atmospheric experience in which the playful yet chilling essence of death’s dance comes to life. As with many of Efteling’s
attractions, Danse Macabre is designed to captivate visitors through storytelling, creating a unique blend of eerie thrills and enchanting visuals. Intamin’s expertise in ride engineering ensures the ride is both technologically advanced and

Kicking off the final moments of IAAPA Expo was an exciting opportunity to attend IAAPA Celebrates at Epcot! This special event brought together attendees of the IAAPA Expo for an evening that featured exclusive access to some of Epcot’s top attractions,
including limited-wait rides on the thrilling Vekoma coaster Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. It was a fantastic way to unwind after a busy week at the expo. While IAAPA Expo attendees were enjoying their evening at EPCOT, many ACE members
attended the annual Florida region meetup at BJ's — a fantastic way to end the night!

The Belgium-based company Alterface then showed off its latest project, which will feature “interactive technology, cutting-edge experience design and immersive storytelling.” Some of its featured tools included the CartBox system, which offers an “onboard
controller for ride vehicles that supports an infinite array of interactive devices as well as audio feedback systems, creating highly customizable and synchronized soundscapes.” Also mentioned was the GunBox system, which would “streamline
maintenance and calibration, allowing operators to test and adjust interactive systems with efficiency and ease, even during operational hours.”

Zamperla was next and while its large exhibit did not feature any rides as in years past, they nonetheless created excitement with the announcement of the company’s new Family Thrill Launch coaster. Set to open in 2026 at Parc Spirou (Monteux, Provence-Alpes-Côte
d'Azur, France), the ride will involve two different experiences: the first half features a 40- mph launch up into numerous elements before wrapping around the towering spike and returning to the load station; the second accelerates the train again
over the same launch section at 47 mph, passing over the switch through additional elements and reaching the top of the spike, where gravity takes over and allows the second half to be experienced backward.

Coast 2 Coasters - A Father's Day Special

“The days are long, but the time is short.” A friend told me this when my children were toddlers, and that truth stayed with me. So, when my children could drive, I was determined to take life-changing road trips with them. Traditional societies developed
rites of passage over eons. America is culturally young, and we have precious few of these. But we have a car culture, and our road trips are rides of passage.

In 2021 I drove across America with my son, attending baseball games every night. That was his passion. But my daughter, Ruth, is our family daredevil and polymath. She needed a different ride of passage. One of her passions is roller coasters. It was
obvious. Our 2022 father-daughter road trip would focus on coasters. Coast 2 Coasters was born and took us from one amusement park to another as we drove from LA back to DC. The drive was long, but the time was short.

My daughter wanted to ride mega coasters. But I wanted a time machine that would slow my waning days with her. I wanted more time to enjoy my daughter the creator, maker, artist, roller -skater and coaster enthusiast. The joy was in seeing and hearing
her passion for coasters like Time Traveler, Steel Vengeance (Steve), West Coast Racers, Outlaw Run, and Diamondback. Ruth’s categorical knowledge of the manufacturers, her analysis of the theming and color theory
of each coaster, and her thoughts on park design were inspiring. It is deeply gratifying to learn from your children.

Photo: Robert Moran. View full-sized image.

Road trips are both destination and journey. We had many destinations – Santa Monica Pier, Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, Six Flags Magic Mountain, AdventureDome, Elitch Gardens, Silver Dollar City, Kings Island, and Cedar Point. But the journey is often
where the memories are made. In our case, it was watching my daughter build confidence behind the wheel on a very long drive, an impromptu stop at a roadside fruit stand selling cocos frescos near the California-Nevada border, stumbling across the
self-proclaimed “World’s Largest Fork” in Springfield, Missouri, discovering the ghost town in Silver Reef, Utah, a late night drive to Swigg in Salt Lake City, and Ruth’s “adventurer hat” – a leather cowboy hat.

The hat was a wonderful puzzle to me. Ruth is already an adventurer. She didn’t need the hat. Was it emblematic of the trip? Was it a memento mori? Whatever it was, I will always remember her smiling with me in front of state welcome signs wearing it.

The journey also gifts us time and space to think. For me the coaster became a metaphor for life. The joy, anticipation, surprise, terror, elation, and even discomfort are all a part of the ride. And the ultimate metaphor for me was The Beast.
Ruth and I rode The Beast many, many times over two days at Kings Island. Our first night at the park, we rode it as the sun set over rolling green hills. I have ridden The Beast with all the fake bravado of an insecure boy in the 1980s.
I have ridden The Beast under the spell of transitory teenage love. And I rode it again with my daughter on the 50th anniversary of the park, hoping I could slow time, and enjoy her coming of age. One ride. Different perspectives. The roller
coaster of life. The days are long, but the time is short.

In June of 1984, the world’s first roller coaster with three vertical loops made its debut on the German fair circuit. Originally named Drier Looping, this Anton Schwarzkopf creation continued to thrill riders under showman Rudolf Barth for the next 12 years with its last fair appearance being in 1996. The ride then began traveling the world, spending two years at Sunway Park in Malaysia, five years at Flamingo Land in the United Kingdom and 12 years at La Feria Chapultepec Mágico in Mexico.

On November 24, 2020, Indiana Beach announced it had purchased this classic coaster and would be refurbishing it. Over the next three seasons, the park’s maintenance team worked to rebuild the ride, with the three iconic loops going up in late 2021 and track work being completed in early 2022. But the park wasn’t stopping there, as they found new rolling stock by purchasing the trains from the recently closed Mindbender at Galaxyland in Canada. By the end of 2023, testing had finally begun.

All-American Triple Loop (as it’s now named) sits in the far northwest corner of Indiana Beach in what was once the north parking lot. After walking past Steel Hawg, guests are presented with a view of the curved lift hill and beyond it the three vertical loops. Upon entering the station, riders enter a three-car train with a seatbelt, lap bar and accordion over-the-shoulder restraints. The trains themselves are a bit cramped by modern standards, but ride crews work hard to ensure everyone is secured properly and comfortably.

Heading up the lift hill, the ride uses an interesting method of propulsion. The drive tires along the curved lift are connected by a series of drive shafts that begin in the station and go all the way up the hill. From the top of the 111-foot lift, riders get a brief glimpse of the park and Lake Shafer before experiencing a curved drop, reaching speeds of 53 mph. Curving back up into a trim brake, the ride dives once more into the first two vertical loops where the positive G forces keep picking up. Riders curve back up into another trim brake (a small tire drive lift itself) before diving into the third and final loop, the smallest of the three, where the positive G forces reach their peak. The ride ends with twists and turns around a large figure eight in the inside of the structure before hitting the brakes.

The introduction of All-American Triple Loop to Indiana Beach’s collection of rides and coasters is quite an achievement. To say the team has done great work to bring this ride back to life would be an understatement, with the preservation of a classic ride being of particular importance to ACE. They’ve brought more than corn to Indiana in the form of a fun, intense, retro coaster that will delight and thrill riders for years to come.

Anticipation over the opening of Top Thrill 2 has been building for months, as crews worked at what many enthusiasts call the “mecca of the coaster world.” Cedar Point continued its legacy of innovation by bringing in Zamperla to help reimagine
what was already a thrilling ride and taking it to the next level.

The original Top Thrill Dragster was a thrill seeker’s dream with its hydraulic launch system that shot riders from 0–120 mph in 3.8 seconds over the top hat and spiraling down back to the station. It was an intense experience like no other
in its time. When Top Thrill Dragster closed in August of 2021, enthusiasts were heartbroken and wondered if it would ever make a comeback.

The top hat remained tall and proud over barriers that were placed around the ride. Every passing guest shared their ride experience and their hope that it was not gone forever. In the summer of 2023, Cedar Point began teasing that something new was in
the works. It was not until August of that year that Cedar Point announced the partnership with Zamperla to introduce the first-of-its-kind, triple-launch strata coaster, Top Thrill 2. Top Thrill 2 brings riders up to the starting
line and with its first launch, sends them forward at 74 mph about a third of the way up the tracks before sending them backward in what feels like a rollback, until the second launch. The second launch catches many riders off guard as it sends them
even faster in reverse at 101 mph up the spike for a weightless lift out of their seat. Gravity then takes over and brings riders toward the station once again. As the third launch punches them forward at 120 mph, they are sent over the top hat, nearly
standing the entire time, after which they are whipped into a tight spiral and experience a head chopper that has them ducking.

As ACE members stood in the queue and awaited their next ride, nothing but positive feedback filled the station. Many members spoke about the uniqueness of the ride, while others shared the nostalgic aspect of the queue music being the same songs as for
Top Thrill Dragster, but appropriately remixed. Walking into the queue for the first time since the original Dragster went down was an emotional time for many, including one of ACE’s newest members who said, “Walking up that queue,
I was crying tears of joy. All the memories of the old ride experience came back to me, combined with the anticipation of what the experience was to come.” Another member commented, “I am over the moon with what Zamperla has done here. It was so much
better than I had hoped it could be.” The joy, the excitement, the appreciation of what has taken place at Cedar Point was felt by all visiting the park and will continue as each new rider takes their first ride.

This February ACE celebrated those valentines in our lives that aren’t human. ACEers with fur and scale babies got together to introduce themselves and the family of pets. The meeting had pet families with cats, dogs, lizards, and many others to give cuddles and love. The pets mostly got on screen, when they weren’t being shy, and were able to meet other pets with ACE parents.

Some pets were named after beloved rides while others had names prior to being welcomed into ACE families or were named for something else entirely. They got to share some of their proclivities such as which parks they would like to visit and their favorite rides. These ranged from some less taxing train rides to high rides like Ferris wheels and drop rides. There were also quite a few water rides mentioned, based on some of the pet interest in being (or not being) wet. Some pets presented a general ride type for their favorites while others had a specific ride they would be likely to enjoy.

There were quite a few stories of pets who watch the ACE YouTube channel and all the great videos featured there. Enjoying learning about the rides and parks they likely will not be able to ride, but enjoying the colors and fast movements all the same. Many of the favorite foods from parks were based on favorite foods at home and included some delicious choices such as potato patch fries, cinnamon bread, ice cream, and chicken fingers. There were a lot of smiles and some great stories of the pets in our lives sharing our love of coasters, even if only in our own minds.

Over the course of the hour together everyone got to share and learn a little more about each other and the pets in the room (including those hiding under beds). The event ended with a theoretical question of what ride each ACEer would love to be able to ride with their pet, if it was a possibility. Some great answers were included here, including some defunct rides and home parks.

ACE Digital Events - Spectrum Meetup

ACE has memberships across ages, locations and interests. One of the latest ACE digital events celebrated some of those differences with a meetup for members who identify as on the spectrum or those who are allies of the same. This event was inspired
by requests from the digital team to host this subset of ACE, and members were as diverse as the club itself. The event began with some introductions that included the year when the member joined ACE, their home parks and favorite things about the
    club.

Attendees also discussed their favorite things about events and some of the parks and coasters on their wish lists. Conversation moved on to favorite manufacturers, which is one of the things that people from different regions can compare, even if they
haven’t all been on the same roller coasters. Attendees also compared some of the closed roller coasters they were lucky enough to ride before they were remade or lost to replacement.

One of the most bonding moments of the event was when members told stories of the first roller coaster rides they could remember. The timing and locations varied greatly, but all had the same thread of love for the rides. It was wonderful to know that
no matter where we were or how old we are, the thrill of that first ride is something we can all relate to. That, and the fact that everyone enjoys night rides.

ACE Digital Events - International Volunteers Day

International Volunteer Day 2023 had ACE volunteers from various regions signing in to meet up and mix with each other in a digital event. Members in attendance introduced themselves and shared their region and the ways they are involved in ACE. The group
included regional reps and assistant reps plus members from various teams, including national social media teams; the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee; volunteer inclusion committee; Member Benefits Committee; and others. Members’ roles ranged
from those engaging in hours of volunteering each week, such as members of the Executive Committee, through some who volunteer yearly at Coaster Con. It was a great way to honor those who help even a few hours a year because every hour put into ACE
    makes it better for everyone.

Attendees spoke about some of the best ways they get information about ACE and how they could improve their connections to others in the club. There was discussion of new communication avenues that are potentially going to be offered to members as well
as some of the ways in which communication might shift with national events and in general. As ACE offers news through such a wide variety of avenues, there was a great deal to talk about here. With members of the ACE News editorial staff,
Facebook team and some other social media moderators in attendance, it was easy to speak about some of the details and differences these teams deal with in the course of their posting.

Discussion then moved away from communication to coasters, trips and events. The group spoke about some of the things that are sparking excitement in 2024. These included pretty much every national event on the schedule, including the ACE Journey to Central
Europe international trip, Coaster Con 45 and the ACE Preservation Conference in Iowa and Missouri. Many spoke too about the winter events that are upcoming, including No Coaster Con, CoasterBash!, Eastcoaster and Winterfest. These were mentioned
with excitement as ways to stay connected to ACE friends in a season in which there are fewer in-person riding events. Attendees were sharing fond memories of having discussions not only with other members but also with park reps and manufacturers.
In addition, some new coaster openings in 2024 are making many attendees animated, in anticipation of a few new credits.

Attendees also shared some of the ways in which they see ACE changing and how they want to stay connected. It was a very appreciative group, as thanks were extended all around for the various roles that are filled throughout the ACE org chart. Volunteers
who attended were then gifted with a digital Zoom background, marking them as an ACE volunteer for use in future meetings and digital events.

IAAPA Expo 2023 - Day 4

The lights went out and all was still. Four days of bringing together every component of the amusement industry wrapped up as the record-breaking IAAPA Expo 2023 drew to a close. The announcements are done; contracts and discussions for 2024 and beyond
    are underway.

Each day of the expo has an unspoken different purpose. Day Four is no different. Each day is exhilarating, but on Day Four the pace is a little slower. There is more time to reconnect and build relationships and explore the other areas of the trade show
    floor.

Conversations were longer at the ACE booth as Joe Draves, Jerry Brick from Palace Entertainment, the Irvine Ondrey Engineering team, Mark Rosenzweig of 3dxScenic, Chris Gray from Skyline Attractions and many others stopped by to hear updates from ACE
and meet ACE members visiting the booth. The conversations were filled with ideas of how to support the suppliers and updates from ACE, including the world’s largest ride, our 45th anniversary and upcoming events.

While so much was happening in the ACE booth, other ACE volunteers were visiting booths to continue to foster our relationships in the industry. Visits were made to Zamperla, Bolliger & Mabillard, Give Kids The World, Ride Entertainment, MV Rides, Wiegland,
Chance Rides, New England Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, National Roller Coaster Museum and Archives and many more to follow up on conversations from earlier in the week or to connect.

Interviews filled the day to ask the questions that curious minds have. ACE Communications Director Derek Perry, ACE Podcast Coordinator Jessica Gardner and ACE Social Media Manager Doug Perry conducted interviews with Preston Perkes of S&S Worldwide,
Carin Davits and Ricardo Etges of Vekoma, Jake Kilcup of Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC), Adam Sandy and Michael Coleman of Zamperla and many other stars of the amusement industry. During the interview with Perkes, it was mentioned that the Transformers-themed
Axis coaster will be approximately the same height as S&S’s prototype and will be located indoors on the level above automobile parking. At a top speed of 35 mph, riders will take two consecutive trips around the track. He also spoke about S&S Worldwide's
new RailRyder single-rail family coaster concept that drew inspiration from their Steeplechase design. Proud of RMC's Brass Ring Award win this week, Jake Kilcup pointed out that RMC’s new Wild Moose concept really does fit into the same plot of land
as a traditional wild mouse roller coaster and was inspired by the prelift section on Twisted Colossus. Other members of the ACE social media team highlighted ACE Founder Richard Munch and Intamin's Falcon's Flight lead car, which
will be riding the tracks of the world's largest roller coaster ever built.

As the end of the show neared, one industry professional said it so well: “It is time for the real work to begin.” Everything in life only has the potential to be what one is willing to make of it, and leaving a tradeshow is a prime example of this. Brainstorming,
ideas, relationship building, creativity and collaborations are ahead this winter for ACE and all the manufacturers, suppliers and park representatives in attendance.

After those few moments of dimmed lights and quiet, the postshow action immediately begins. Backdrops are disassembled, boxes are packed, a truck drives by to be loaded and the announcement is made to clear the aisles because the carpet is about to be
rolled up for another year. Reminiscent of departure day from a week-long Coaster Con event, it's an incredible and confusing mixture of feelings: exhaustion, exhilaration, excitement and satisfaction of a week well executed.

After a jam-packed Day 1 of the 2023 IAAPA Expo, the momentum continued with a slew of more exciting announcements on Day 2. The morning began with exciting news from Sally Dark Rides. After proudly showing off its Mr. Krabs animatronic for Spongebob’s Crazy Carnival Ride going to Circus Circus Hotel in Las Vegas, it revealed that a second Spongebob-themed dark ride will be built at The Land of Legends Theme Park in Turkey! The contract was officially signed during the press conference.

Extreme Engineering then showed off its newest flat ride model, the Ollie-Loop. This skateboard-inspired attraction features a programmable turntable, allowing for different thrill levels. Its compact height of 15 ft. tall makes it ideal for indoor venues.
Coaster fans were also delighted to see two ride vehicles on display for the company’s suspended coaster model, the Coaster Cloud. One model featured side-by-side seating, while the other sported a back-to-back arrangement for additional thrills.

Following yesterday’s train debut of Penguin Trek and commitment to preserve Loch Ness Monster, SeaWorld once again took the spotlight. In a joint announcement with ProSlide, the companies shared that three new RideHOUSE attractions
will be built at SeaWorld waterpark properties. After seeing the popularity of this family water play structure at Sesame Place, additional custom models will be built at Aquatica San Antonio, Adventure Island Tampa Bay, and Aquatica Orlando.

In addition to yesterday’s Top Thrill 2 train reveal, Zamperla held another press conference introducing its Integrated Rides package. This package is designed to fit a new roller coaster and flat ride in one plot of land to create increased
ride interaction and visual appeal to onlooking guests.

Triotech was next to introduce an exciting new product, called SuperFly. This dynamic theater attraction stands apart from the rest by having riders situated in a standing position for increased immersion, along with sensory effects such as mist and temperature
features. It won’t be long until the public can experience this attraction either; the first SuperFly will be installed at Neb’s Fun World, a family entertainment center located in Ontario, Canada. Triotech also spoiled coaster lovers with a video
showing off Primordial, a fully interactive indoor/outdoor dark roller coaster that opened last month at Lagoon in Farmington, Utah.

WhiteWater was next to introduce four new water attractions: the Wall Runner, which combines vertical and forward motions to create a zero-gravity effect; the Infinity Master Blaster, which features a continuous loop layout, allowing riders to board and
exit the slide in the same spot; the Mini Blaster, a children’s version of the Master Blaster model; and Elevated Aqua Forms, a highly configurable water play structure designed to allow parents to easily watch children on all levels of the structure.

The day ended with a spectacular sight: a world record-breaking drone show. Guinness World Records were on site to confirm that this display had the most individual drone units of any drone show ever performed. Despite the rain, the drones powered on
to provide a brilliant IAAPA-themed demonstration, showing the capabilities and potential of drone entertainment.

The first day of the 2023 IAAPA Expo had no shortage of crowds and reveals. Held in Orlando, the trade show and week-long convention welcomes amusement professionals, media and enthusiasts to network, attend development courses and purchase the latest
    novelties in the amusement industry.

This year’s Expo opened with a 9 a.m. song and dance, complete with kick line. The show floor was packed with bright claw machines and even a life-like Grogu animatronic. However, roller coaster enthusiasts were busy sprinting to the different roller
coaster manufacturers’ booths to witness the first look at new trains of upcoming roller coasters in 2024.

The morning began with the much-anticipated reveal from Cedar Point (Sandusky, Ohio) and Zamperla as they unveiled the train for Top Thrill 2. The beautiful blue race car features gray and red paint stripes and seems to have no shoulder restraints,
opting for a different lap bar option once again. Riders will get a chance to race into 2024 as they take on the world’s tallest and fastest triple-launch strata coaster.

After wishing Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters Inc. (PTCI) a happy 100th anniversary, attendees got to view the newest trains for Hersheypark (Hershey, Pennsylvania) for Comet, the oldest continuously operating coaster at Hersheypark. The color
scheme will change in 2024 with the new custom trains sporting a multitone blue color scheme and gold trim detailing.

Coaster lovers then quickly rushed over to Swiss manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard’s booth to see the train for Penguin Trek, SeaWorld Orlando’s 2024 family coaster (Orlando, Florida). Themed to adventure through Antarctica, it races along
up to 43 mph, navigating twists and turns, to reach the end, which is a real penguin habitat! This new indoor/outdoor family ride has a height requirement of just 42 inches, making it an excellent addition to the lineup at SeaWorld Orlando.

Coaster adventurers then made it over to the Dutch company Vekoma Rides’ booth to see the reveal of the Good Gravy! family roller coaster. This coaster is set to open in May 2024 at Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari (Santa Claus, Indiana). This
first-of-its-kind-in-North-America coaster, is a Family Boomerang, themed to Thanksgiving. The ride cars themselves are a festive white design that will go perfectly with the theming of the ride, which is said to be themed intricately to Thanksgiving
    at grandma’s.

The next reveal of the day was from American manufacturer Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC), which showed off its train for Fire in the Hole, the Silver Dollar City (Branson, Missouri) roller coaster that is currently allowing riders a final
ride on the original track before RMC adds its touch. Built 50 years ago, the indoor coaster has welcomed over 25 million guests, so now is the time to head over to be in the final count of riders.

Getting international, Six Flags Qiddiya (Saudi Arabia) and Intamin unveiled the Falcon’s Flight roller coaster vehicle. Falcon’s Flight, inspired by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s iconic national bird, will be the longest, tallest and
fastest roller coaster in the world. The project is anticipated for completion in 2024.

The final roller coaster vehicle reveal of the day took place at the S&S Worldwide booth. S&S Worldwide, in association with Hasbro and SEVEN (Saudi Entertainment Ventures) have announced the world’s first Axis coaster will be themed to Transformers.
Coming to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, this one-of-a-kind attraction will feature a 45mph launch, two inversions and two cycles through the indoor course.

Top Thrill 2, World's Largest Triple-Launch Coaster, Coming to Cedar Point

In 2003, Top Thrill Dragster opened as the world's tallest and fastest roller coaster, built by Intamin. Featuring a blistering 120 mile-per-hour launch, it climbed a forty-two story "top hat" (a massive hill shaped like, well, a top hat) to
race the sky. But ever since this beloved attraction closed in September 2021, roller coaster enthusiasts around the world have been yearning to find out its ultimate fate. The mystery and intrigue swelled in early 2023, when Cedar Point teased that
Top Thrill Dragster would return in 2024 - but in a new form. Finally, the secret is out!

Now known as Top Thrill 2, the coaster has received a handful of upgrades from Zamperla. Most prominently, the track has been extended to include a second forty-two story hill. This time, it's a vertical spike, pointing riders straight down
    at the ground.

Additionally, Zamperla outfitted Top Thrill 2 with new rolling stock - trains from their Lightning brand. The restraints promise to be extremely comfortable and accomodating for all body types, while the front and back of the train feature
    slick racecar-inspired decoration.

At the start, using a magnetic (LSM - Linear Synchronous Motors) launch system, riders peel out down the straightaway reaching speeds of 74 mph racing toward the sky on Top Thrill 2's original 420-foot-tall “top hat” tower. But the train doesn't
have enough speed to scale the tower, so riders "roll back" - a coveted sensation for roller-coaster enthusiasts. After falling back down the top-hat, the train shifts into reverse and launches again, reaching speeds of 101 mph backwards.

Then, riders climb the forty-two story spike, facing straight down toward the ground. After nearing the top, gravity pulls the train back down and it boosts through the final launch - propelling the train to 120 miles per hour, the same speed as the original
Top Thrill Dragster. This time, it successfully climbs the top-hat tower, coming back down to end the 3,422 foot long adrenaline rush.

Coaster Con happens for one week each year — the week beginning on Father’s Day in June. It’s a gathering of the American Coaster Enthusiasts, during which the world’s largest roller coaster enthusiast organization convenes to ride coasters and to discuss, learn about and savor everything related to coasters and amusement parks.

The host parks offer exclusive opportunities for members, such as behind-the-scenes ride tours, ERTs (exclusive ride times — enthusiasts get to enjoy certain rides before the park opens or after the park closes, often with minimal wait times) and park-catered dinners that are a noticeable step up from the normal food offerings.

The anticipation before a roller coaster ride is always electric for enthusiasts. Hersheypark's excitement has increased as well with the highly anticipated opening of Rocky Mountain Construction's (RMC) newest creation Wildcat's Revenge. Laura
Woodburn Krolczyk, assistant general manager at Hersheypark, exclaimed, "This one is absolutely invigorating!" Amanda Polyak, public relations manager at Hersheypark and Zoo America, added, "My heart is bursting right now. I am so excited."

Hersheypark, located in Hershey, Pennsylvania, has always been a haven for roller coaster enthusiasts. The addition of Wildcat's Revenge brings the total number of coasters to an impressive 15. Solidifying its position as the premier destination
for coaster lovers in the Northeast, Amanda Polyak said, "If you like coasters, there literally is no better place to come to in the state or the Northeast than Hersheypark this summer."

The story behind Wildcat's Revenge dates back to the early 20th century. Wildcat, the park's founder Milton Hershey's first coaster purchase, opened in 1923. After its closure in 1945, the modern Wildcat emerged in 1996. The Wildcat name returns with a vengeance in this wood and steel hybrid version – Wildcat's Revenge.

Bringing Wildcat's Revenge to life has been a challenging journey. "We've been dreaming about this ride since 2017," shared Krolczyk. Unexpected challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, extended the project timeline. However, the silver
lining emerged when it was realized that the coaster could open in 2023, precisely 100 years after the debut of the original Wildcat.

So, what can riders expect from this thrilling new coaster experience? Wildcat's Revenge stands tall at 140 feet and reaches speeds of up to 62 mph. Its first drop features a staggering 82-degree descent, and the ride spans over 3,500 feet
in length. With four inversions and an array of airtime elements, Wildcat's Revenge promises an adrenaline rush like no other.

Creating Wildcat's Revenge within an existing footprint presented unique challenges. Jake Kilcup, RMC’s director of design and engineering, explained, "Working within an existing roller coaster that we had, which is a reprofiling, provides
a little bit of constraint on what we have to work with." Despite these limitations, the team seamlessly integrated the old and new elements, resulting in an incredible experience for riders.

Wildcat's Revenge has already become a hot topic of conversation among enthusiasts. The ride features a world-record-breaking element: the largest Underflip in the world. ACE member Prime Junior said, "It's a weird feeling, but it is insane."
The ride's intense airtime moments and smooth transitions have captivated visitors, earning it a spot among the top attractions at Hersheypark.

"We love what we do, and hopefully it shows up when everybody rides it," expressed the president of RMC. The passion and dedication of the RMC team shine through in the impeccable design and execution of Wildcat's Revenge. From the heart-pounding
moments to the breathtaking elements, every aspect of the ride is a testament to their commitment to delivering unparalleled thrills.

As the first hybrid roller coaster in Pennsylvania, Wildcat's Revenge is poised to be a must-ride for coaster enthusiasts, guaranteeing an unforgettable experience at Hersheypark.

Arctic Rescue Opens at SeaWorld San Diego

SeaWorld San Diego has brought the frozen tundra to Southern California with the debut of Arctic Rescue. The longest and fastest straddle coaster on the West Coast features two snowmobile-themed trains that can hold 16 riders each. The coaster station was built into the old Wild Arctic Simulator ride building and has a unique U-turned track exiting the building and into the first launch. The station also features an aurora borealis overhead while riders are waiting to board.

Once you step onto your snowmobile, you place your feet in the footholds, it features a very comfortable lap bar restraint. Riders sit forward and hold onto the snowmobile handle bars to ride. This position helps the riders to navigate and lean into the twists and turns encountered on their expedition.

There are a total of 3 launches on Arctic Rescue, each one faster than the previous. The first launch propels you out of the station. The second launch starts in a research station tunnel and the third and fastest launch propels you over the highest section of track.

The theming reminds you of being in the Arctic with white (snow) and black ground cover. A UTV is in place ready to transport people or arctic animals in need of help. You can see a warning sign for wind gusts and there is a research station tunnel which houses the second launch. There is also a wonderful nod to the former Wild Arcticsimulator ride in the amidst the outside track. One can almost hear those blades starting up as you pass.

Riding With ACE: A Day of Thrills and Behind-the-Scenes Action at Carowinds

As a lifelong roller coaster enthusiast from North Carolina (and more recently, the project manager for the Ride With Us podcast), I was thrilled to have the opportunity to visit Carowinds on April 21, 2023, with two of my fellow friends and ACE members,
Anthony Saporito of New Jersey and Andrew Pace of New York City. Our experience at the park was one of the most memorable experiences we've ever had, as we got to interview some of the park’s lead staff members for the podcast and take a backstage
tour of some of the most exciting attractions.

Carowinds is a park that has a special place in my heart; it is not only my home park, but one that I've been visiting for over 20 years. Located on the border between North and South Carolina, the park has an incredible collection of roller coasters,
thrill rides and family-friendly attractions. During our visit, we had the chance to ride some fan favorites, including Fury 325, the tallest and fastest gigacoaster in the world; Intimidator, a steel coaster inspired by NASCAR legend
Dale Earnhardt; Afterburn, an inverted coaster that that feels like flying in a fighter jet; and of course, Copperhead Strike, a wacky and twisted adventure packed with incredible launches and hangtime (and my personalfavorite
    coaster in the park).

Our day at Carowinds kicked off with a podcast interview featuring Courtney Weber, the director of communications, and Chris, the brand activation manager. We discussed the park's 50th anniversary plans, the most popular attractions, the newly added Aeronautica Landing, various food options and some of their favorite things about the park. The conversation was lively and informative, and we learned a lot about the behind-the-scenes operations at one of the country's premier amusement parks.

Additionally, Chris was kind enough to do a side segment with Steve Jackson, the director of maintenance, who talked about his experience with building and maintaining some of the park's major attractions, such as Intimidator and Fury 325.
His passion for the rides and his career was palpable, and it was great to hear how much he cared about ensuring memorable experiences for park guests.

A signature highlight of the tour was being able to walk directly under the tracks of the three main coasters we visited: Copperhead Strike, Fury 325 and Intimidator. Chris was extremely hospitable and happy to take us around
the backstage portions of the park, and it was amazing to see the rides from angles that were new to me. It was Anthony’s and Andrew’s first visit to Carowinds, so it was extra special for them to have this unique experience as well.

Overall, our day at Carowinds was an unforgettable experience. From the exciting interviews with Courtney, Chris and Steve to the backstage tour and creative photos captured by Anthony and Andrew, it was an incredible opportunity for us to see Carowinds
in a new light. From a somewhat-biased perspective, I can say Carowinds is truly one of the best parks around, with some of the most thrilling and innovative rides in the industry.

For anyone interested in experiencing Carowinds for themselves, there's no better time to do it than at Coaster Con 45, coming up June 18-23, 2023. It's an opportunity to ride some of the best coasters in the world, meet other enthusiasts and learn more

DarKoaster Now Open at Busch Gardens Williamsburg

Thrills and chills await riders at Busch Gardens Williamsburg as DarKoaster launches into the Octoberfest area. Occupying the former DarKastle building, DarKoaster is North America's first all-indoor straddle coaster and the 10th coaster at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. A straddle coaster sits riders on top of one of two snowmobile-themed trains named Wild Wolf 9684 and FrostBite 17-19. The names were chosen via a social media-based vote earlier this year.

Riders step over the car to sit atop the car like a true snowmobile. A lap bar secures the rider, so one can lean forward to grab the handles of the snowmobile for a unique riding position.

Riders then experience four launches, propelling them through twists and turns integrated among themed elements that continue the story of King Ludwig, which began with The Curse of DarKastle, the previous ride housed in the space. Themed for a snowmobile, the twist and turns simulate swishing through snow-covered hills and moguls.

The coaster, built by Intamin, completes two full circuits of the ride, utilizing a switch track that enables the coaster to bypass the station before completing the second circuit. Suzy Cheely, vice president design and engineering for Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Water Country USA, shared that the ability to complete the circuit twice allowed the coaster to have a length equivalent to other rides at the park and fit into the tight space. During the second pass, themed elements are different to advance the full story of King Ludwig after he was banned from The Curse of DarKastle.

The entire family can enjoy this experience together, as it welcomes riders between 48 inches and 6 feet 5 inches.

Surf’s up! In Orlando? Well, Florida is surrounded on three sides by the ocean, so why not! And this is SeaWorld after all.

Introducing the newest roller coaster in Florida: Pipeline the Surf Coaster, located at SeaWorld Orlando. When Pipeline was announced as the very first surf coaster, the coaster community wondered what it meant. What did Bolliger & Mabillard
(B&M) have up their sleeve? Now we know. And boy, did B&M impress us, as usual!

Riders entering the courtyard where the roller coaster is located notice that the area around Pipeline, as well as the queue, is all beach themed. They are even treated to surf music while exploring the area and waiting in the queue. Once it's
time to surf, riders board an actual oversized surfboard. The restraint system is very similar to a traditional stand-up coaster. During boarding, “surfers” adjust the restraint system to their height and hop in. The first thing to notice is that
the seat does not lock in place like a traditional stand-up coaster. It is free to move up and down even after the shoulder restraint is locked in place. Hmmm, what could this mean?

Once the all-clear signal is given to catch a wave, the coaster begins with a fairly intense launch. And here's where the surf magic begins. While navigating over the bunny hop during the launch, the seat rises up and riders’ feet are no longer on the
floor — er, surfboard. It's a strange sensation at first but amazing nonetheless. After completing the launch, the train enters an overbanked curve. During this maneuver, feet again depart from the floor. For the rest of the course, anytime riders
encounter a negative-G moment, the seat rises and feet dangle. While experiencing a positive-G, feet gently land back on the surfboard. Riders experience many positive and negative Gs while surfing. The course layout is such that the feeling of surfing
is simulated; there are many left and right turns in rapid succession, similar to what a surfer experiences maneuvering a surfboard left and right, trying to maximize the thrill of the ride.

Pipeline the Surf Coaster is a totally excellent experience and a great addition to the amazing coaster lineup at SeaWorld Orlando. When visiting Orlando, devote some time to surfing. Thanks to SeaWorld and B&M, now you can. No ocean required.
