This year's ACE Summer Conference has attendees traveling to New England in the far northeast corner of the United States. The conference starts on Friday, July 26, and runs through Sunday, July 28, visiting Funtown Splashtown USA (Saco, Maine), Story Land (Glen, New Hampshire) and Santa’s Village (Jefferson, New Hampshire).
FUNTOWN SPLASHTOWN USA
In 1960, on a then remote stretch of U.S. Route 1 in Saco, Maine, Ken and Violet Cormier opened Marvel Drive-In, a drive-in restaurant, next to where Andre Dallaire, Ken's brother-in-law had installed a mini-golf course the previous year. In 1963, Dallaire installed a go-kart track behind his golf course, and in 1964, the Cormiers added batting cages and an archery range behind their restaurant. Over the course of the next few years, Cormier and Dallaire added several kiddie and carnival-style rides including SkySlides and Swinging Gyms. Between 1967 and 1998, many rides and attractions were added to (with some moved or removed from) the park. The largest ever expansion of the park, in 1998, came with the arrival of Excalibur, the first wooden coaster in Maine in more than 50 years. In 2007, Splashtown USA was doubled in size. In 2012, the park undertook its largest expansion and renovation project ever. Splashtown USA was again expanded, adding the Mount Olympus Water Slides, additional lounging and seating and three new dining and food locations.
In the few years prior to opening, the founders, Bob and Ruth Morrell, had purchased a large number of dolls from Germany modeled after storybook characters. These characters were the basis for the park. When it opened in 1954, it had just one ride: an old fire truck. Story Land was operated by the family-owned Morrell Corporation from 1954 to 2007. After Stoney Morrell, son of the original owners, passed away in 2007, the park was sold to Kennywood Entertainment, which in turn was bought by Parques Reunidos, where it operates under Palace Entertainment, the company's North American division. The park is now highly regarded as an immaculately well-done family park and spans some 35 acres and has more than 20 rides, plus multiple attractions, interactive nursery rhymes and fairy tales, animal attractions and a variety of shows. Story Land got on the radar of coaster enthusiasts in 2014, when it opened Roar-O-Saurus, an acclaimed family-sized woodie from The Gravity Group.
Santa's Village was the brainchild of Normand and Cecile Dubois who, in the early 1950s, wanted to create something novel in their region. Seeing deer crossing the road sparked Norman's belief that the North Country in New Hampshire would serve well as a home for Santa and his reindeer. On Father's Day 1953, the family amusement park was opened for the first time to the general public. In its first year, the park had pony rides and showcased Francis the Famous Mule. The family also invited Santa Claus to the park, who was accompanied by real reindeer and numerous elves. Today, the park is operated by the third generation of its founders, and most of the rides and attractions, including two junior coasters, have Christmas or winter-themed names. The rides are designed for families with children under age 13. There are also three theaters, two of which present live shows and a third that features a 3-D movie called "A Tinkerdoodle Christmas." Park guests can visit Santa's home, lie in his bed, sit in his chair and have a picture taken with Santa.
