Roller Coaster Group to Hold National Convention in Georgia

ATLANTA, Ga. - Hundreds of roller coaster enthusiasts will descend upon two Georgia theme parks the week of June 15-20, 2008 to celebrate Coaster Con XXXI. A weeklong celebration of all things roller coaster, the 31st annual convention of American Coaster Enthusiasts will be held Sunday to Wednesday at Six Flags Over Georgia in Atlanta and then Thursday and Friday at Wild Adventures in Valdosta. Highlights of the convention will include hours and hours of riding roller coasters while they are closed to the public as well as a keynote address from the CEO of Six Flags, Inc.

The adrenaline junkies in attendance are eager to get high doses of floating “airtime” sensations, thrilling inversions and exciting bursts of speed during abundant sessions of Exclusive Ride Time on Six Flags coasters like Goliath, Georgia Cyclone and Superman—Ultimate Flight and Wild Adventures’ Cheetah, Hangman and Boomerang, although many are here for other reasons, too. Attendees will enjoy camaraderie with like-minded people and regale with stories of coasters ridden in all corners of the world; ACE members have traveled to places like Central America and the Far East to enjoy that next great thrill. Anywhere there’s a coaster you’ll find an ACEer. The madcap Midway Olympics, an annual tradition, will pit teams of five against each other with the goal of being the best at wacky carnival games such as skee ball or ring toss. There will be picnics, contests, surprises and even a General Store featuring club-related materials from tee shirts to license plate frames as well as other vendor booths selling antiques and memorabilia.

On the morning of Tuesday June 17, the members of ACE will present a monument plaque to Six Flags Over Georgia designating the park’s multi-looping coaster, Mindbender as an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark. This is a rare and coveted award that is only awarded to a few coasters a year denoting their status as historically significant.

The convention will peak with a banquet at the Cobb Galleria on Wednesday, June 18, featuring Mark Shapiro, the dynamic CEO of Six Flags, as its keynote speaker. ACE president Mark Cole stated, “We are honored and pleased that Mr. Shapiro will be speaking at our event and I know that his address will be enlightening and entertaining.” Former keynote speakers have included heads of amusement park companies, the president of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, and roller coaster designers.

More information on the event can be found at www.americancoasterenthusiasts.org.
